At Easter we remember the most important events in history, namely the
death and resurection of Jesus, the only Son of God.
Unfortunately for most children Easter has been commericalised into
Easter eggs and bunnies. While we can teach our kids the true meaning
of Easter, they will also be bombarded with other images in the media,
an array of chocolate eggs and bunnies in shops, and friends and
relatives who will talk about the Easter bunny but never mention Jesus.
Our children will inevitably be influenced by all this and distracted from
the real meaning of Easter. We don't want to stop our children having
fun and Easter is a great time of celebration, so short of isolating our
kids from the community, what can be done to emphasise the real meaning
of Easter for them?
One way I thought to do this, is to use one of these images displayed in the community around Easter, the Easter egg, to point to the real meaning of Easter. An Egg can symbolise new life, which is what we as Christians have as a result of what happened at Easter, and a hollow Easter egg can remind children that on Easter morning Jesus tomb was empty because he had risen from the dead. Unfortunately Easter eggs you buy in the shops invariably come in packaging which clearly has nothing to do with the real meaning of Easter. To that end, I have created a simple basket with a Chritian Easter message and images on it. I call the egg in the basket a "Tomb Egg" as it reminds us of Jesus's empty tomb. There is a black and white version which young kids can colour in, or colour versions in jpg and powerpoint which you can print as is or modify to your own tastes. Print them out on a piece of thin cardboard, then cut along the dotted lines and the circle out of the middle of the base. Fold side flaps up, then fold the ends of these flaps to interlock with the slits from the opposite flap. Staple these in place, then place a hollow foil wrapped Easter egg in the backet and fold the ends up to hold the egg in place and staple them togther at the top.
